1970

4th January Frank Head dies at Newmarket General Hospital at the age of 66.
7th January Ron P Sleath passes away.
January The Company wins the Battalion Squad Drill competition in a very close competition with the 1st Enfield.
7th March The Company takes part in a Battalion Display at Enfield Grammar School, where a brilliant performance is given, executing drill movements in fours without a word of command.
2nd May The 80th Company Display: Mr Bill Hutchings breaks his leg during a Gym item at the display at Lavender School.
May The "Sixteen Squad" item by the 3rd Enfield was a great success at the Royal Albert Hall Display. Sixteen Boys (in fours) gave a display of precision drill without words of commands.

September The BB announces the change from Pillboxes to Forage caps.
30th October Top Squads Night: 8000 BB enthusiasts attend the top squad night at the Empire Pool, Wembley. The programme features the HM Band of the Royal Marines, Queens Park Rangers, Metropolitan Police dogs and Cliff Richard. The 3rd Enfield perform their precision drill without words of command as "Top Squad".

3rd November The Duke of Edinburgh meets members of Enfield Battalion at Forty Hall, at a Duke of Edinburgh Awards event.

March The Company wins the Battalion Band competition.
20th March The 3rd Enfield give a drill display at the Enfield Battalion Display.
7th May The 4th London beat the 3rd Enfield in the final of the Devonshire Cup, 182 1/4 points to 176 3/4 points, with the test piece Larbert.

1972

January The Company wins the Squad Drill competition
March The Company wins the Bugle team, Drum Team and Bugle Band competition.
March The 3rd Enfield Bugle Band, along with the 4th and 73rd London, play at the League Cup final, Wembley. The event is also televised.

25th March The Company wins the London District Two Section Drill competition, with the 14th West Kent and 5th London second and third respectively.
12th May The Company wins the Devonshire Cup for the second time with the march "Royal Albert Hall". They beat the 13th Bromley by 189 1/2 points to 183 points, so achieving a band and drill double.

23rd October Ron Langhorn retires as Captain of the Company. Bernard Barwick takes over the post.
December The Band takes a trip to Berkhamstead to help the 1st Berkhamstead promote the BB in the area.

1973

10th March The 1st and 3rd Enfield's Bugle Bands qualify for the final of the Devonshire Cup. This is the first all-Enfield final, and is also the 50th Devonshire Cup final. The test piece for the competition is a march called "Devonshire".
30th March The Company wins the London District Challenge Bugle competition for the first time.

Shown below is a publicity shot which appeared in the Enfield Gazette, running up to the 50th Devonshire Cup, in which the 1st Enfield and 3rd Enfield Companies were the two finalists. From left to right the picture shows Peter Williams (1st Enfield bandmaster), Martin Legg (1st Enfield bugler), the 1st Enfield's bass drummer, Christopher Langhorn (3rd Enfield bass drummer), Tim Hart (3rd Enfield bugler) and Ted Fairhurst (3rd Enfield bandmaster). In the end the 3rd Enfield lost the final to the 1st by 168 points to 162

8th September The 90th Anniversary of the Brigade - Star Show, Crystal Palace: The 3rd Enfield takes part in the massed Bugle Band display.
9th September Brigade Council Church Parade from Horseguards Parade to Central Hall, Westminster. The 3rd Enfield takes part in the Display.

1975 - Christ Church is 100 years old

28th February The Company wins the London District Bugle Team competition for the third year in a row.
7th March Bob Pinner (Captain 1945 to 1950) dies.
22nd March The Company wins the London District Two Section Drill competition.
10th April For the first time the Company wins the London District First Aid competition.
9th-10th May Royal Albert Hall Display: The Company provides the Bugle Team and the First Aid Team, and gives a drill (Two Section) demonstration and forms part of the massed bands in the finale. Also, the Buglers take part in the item "Bugle Command". One of the Guests of Honour is Cliff Richard.

16th April The Company takes part in a sponsored walk at the Arnold House Cheshire home for the disabled.
13th-14th May The Royal Albert Hall Display: The Company provides the First Aid team on the Friday night.

Here is the Enfield Battalion contribution to the BB celebrations for the Queen's Silver Jubilee. They held an "It's Boys' Brigade Jubilee Knockout" (based on the popular 1970s TV show "It's a Knockout". The event was held at Enfield Town Park on the 28th May 1977.
June "Youth Empire and Society" - A book by Dr John Springhall including a look at the history of the 3rd Enfield, is published.

Message from the Boys' Brigade to the Queen on Her Majesty's Silver Jubilee
25th September The biggest youth parade in the world - 4000 young men and women parade along the mall to Buckingham Palace in the rain. The 3rd Enfield Bugle Band took part in the event.

1978

14th March The 3rd wins the Battalion Bugle Team competition, but loses the Battalion Bugle Band competition. The 3rd also wins the Battalion Drill competition.
18th March The 1st and 3rd Enfield's Bugle Bands both qualify for the final of the Devonshire Cup at the Royal Albert Hall Display.
8th April The Company wins easily the London District Two Section Drill competition for the second year running.
May The Company Display is held.

12th May The 3rd Enfield wins the Devonshire Cup in the final against the 1st Enfield, thus reversing the result of 1973. The Company beat the 1st Enfield by 5 points; 188.5 to 183.5. The test piece was Thames Valley. Ted Fairhurst, retired as the Bandmaster of the 3rd after this competition, after a career of 17 years with band. The following day the 3rd's band gave an excellent display apart from one mishap - when drummer Dominic Beach tripped and did a complete somersault over his side drum. He just picked himself up an carried on!

12th November The combined Enfield BB Bugle band as the Star Band 90, takes part in the Enfield Youth Marching Band competition. One 3rd Enfield Boy faints just before the band goes out. The Band only wins the Drum Major runners-up award.

16th February Sgt Robert Tovey becomes London District Solo Bugle Champion.
17th March The Company's Bugle Band wins through to the final of Devonshire Cup competition.
31st March The Company wins the London District Two Section Cup for the third time in a row, although there was a conflict with administrators of the competition.
5th May The Company Display is held at Chase Side Primary School.

11th-12th May The Company convincingly beats the 4th London Bugle Band in the final of the Devonshire Cup (11th May; 181.5 points to 166.5), with the test piece Diamond. The 3rd Enfield does the Band/Drill Double for the third time.

As winners of the Devonshire Cup competition the 3rd Enfield gives a Band demonstration on 12th May. The Company forms part of the massed Enfield Bugle Band display. This "Star Band 90" item was to mark the 90th year if the BB in Enfield. The 1st and 3rd take part in the finale of every performance, in which the New and Old London colours were trooped to mark the 25th anniversary of the New Colours.

The 1st and 3rd Enfield companies mark the anniversary of the Queen's and London District colours. The honour was given to us because of our great success in the Daily Telegraph Shield competition since 1906.

A special parade item at the 1979 Royal Albert Hall display, which included the 1st and 3rd Enfield Companies. It was a special anniversary of the Queen's Colours and London District Colours. Between us and the 1st Enfield we had won the Daily Telegraph Shield no less than 23 times at that stage in 1979, which was a record, and hence carried the two aforementioned Colours. This is why we were involved in the parade

29th September The First for Boys Campaign: A large BB Display is put on in Trafalgar Square to begin the new "First for Boys" Campaign. This is increase the numbers within the Brigade for the Centenary Year (1983). The 3rd Enfield takes part in the "Star Band 90" item, which is made up of all the bands in Enfield at the time.
