Enfield Battalion Company Section 5-a-side Football
Added 6th December 2011 by Tom Boorman

On 3rd December, a team from the 3rd Enfield entered the Enfield Battalion Company Section 5-a-side Football competition.

The competition, which was held in the sports hall at Trinity-at-Bowes Methodist Church (home of the 18th Enfield), included a Junior competition (boys up to and including school year 9) and a Senior competition (school years 10 to 13).

The 3rd Enfield entered the younger age group. Despite having a team made up entirely of final year Junior Section boys in a Company Section competition (and also being the youngest team), the boys did extremely well to come second in their age group, winning two games and drawing one in the group stage and then narrowly losing to the 10th/12th Enfield in the final. The Senior competition was won by the 11th Enfield.

A massive well done to the boys who took part for an excellent performance! Check out some photos below...

Climbing wall at Trinity at Bowes
Added 21st September 2011 by Tom Boorman

From 15th to 17th September, leaders from Enfield Battalion attended a training course to become instructors on the new climbing wall at Trinity at Bowes Methodist Church (18th Enfield HQ).

Other leaders from the Church, GB and other groups took part in the course, which was held over two evenings and the whole of Saturday.

This will lead the way for us to use the wall when it is fully up and running, and also for us to help instruct at the centre for others groups.

This is a great new facility which will benefit the centre and the local community.

Enfield Town Show 2011
Added 6th September 2011 by Tom Boorman

On Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th September, The Boys' Brigade Enfield Battalion and The Girls' Brigade London North District had a combined stand at the Enfield Town Show in the Town Park.

The event is used by many local business, organisations, charities, Churches etc. to promote their work and put on things to do for people of all ages.

The BB/GB stand had a number of display stands to show some of the activities that we do, and there were a number of members of staff on hand to speak to people about the organisations. There was also an inflatable bungee run as part of the stand which was free for people to have a go on. On Saturday there was a tug of war competition in the main arena organised by YOU (Youth Organisations in Uniform), which was entered by teams from the BB, Scouts and Volunteer Police Cadets. A number of other displays were put on in the main arena throughout the weekend.

Saturday was a very busy day in terms of the number of people as the weather was very good. Unfortunately Sunday was quite a wet day but there were still a good number of people despite the conditions. A large number of people showed an interest in the BB and GB and hopefully the event will result in some new members for Companies across Enfield.

Summer camp 2011 - Jersey
Added 1st August 2011 by Tom Boorman

From 23rd to 30th July, the 10th and 3rd Enfield once again joined together for our summer camp, which took place in Jersey at the Boys' Brigade Headquarters in the village of St John. In total there were 12 boys and 8 staff on the camp.

Throughout the week the boys got to take part in a number of off site activities including blo-karting (a go-kart style vehicle powered by a sail), coasteering, ringo rides, an around the town challenge in St Helier (the capital of Jersey), adventure golf, swimming at Aquasplash, go-karting, beach olympics and more. There was also time for some trips to various beaches around the island as well as shopping in St Helier.

On site activities included a quiz, devotions led by Sammy Bosworth (Youth Worker at Winchmore Hill Baptist Church, 10th Enfield HQ), football and other sports. Our now traditional talent show took place on the final evening, with items including a face painting contest, dancing, tricks, a Rolo eating contest, a visit from Mavis and Binny on their summer holidays and much more. The show ended with a singalong which started off with two people but ended with almost the whole camp joining in!

Another traditional part of the camp is the inter tent competition, where the tents compete in various areas such as the tent inspection, quiz, beach olympics, around the town challenge (and more) and an overall winner is decided. Bragging rights this year went to tent 1, which consisted of Owen (3rd Enfield), Charlie, James and Ben (10th Enfield).

Overall the camp was very successful and enjoyable, with loads of great activities and lots of wonderful weather as well!

As with the last few years a camp DVD will be produced with a load of photos and videos from the week, be sure to get your copy at the start of the new session in September.

There will also be some photos from the camp on this website in the next few weeks, keep checking back to see them!

Summer programme - the final two weeks
Added 20th July 2011 by Tom Boorman

In the final two weeks of the summer programme for this year we have had a number of activities for the boys to take part in.

On 4th July, immediately after our World Records evening, members of the Company Section and Seniors had the opportunity to join with the 10th Enfield for a games evening at Winchmore Hill Baptist Church, where there were games, Wii, XBox, table tennis and more.

On 11th July we had our final meeting of the session. All boys and their families were invited to our traditional summer BBQ which was held in the garden of Christ Church. A nice way to end the session and all of the food was gone by the end of the evening!

A big thank you to everyone for their support over the past session. We now have a few weeks off for the summer holidays and our first meeting of the 2011/2012 session will be on Monday 5th September at the normal times.

World Records evening
Added 13th July 2011 by Tom Boorman

On 4th July, the boys got the chance to try some records from the Guinness Book of Records.

Records on offer involved eating cream crackers quickly, arranging Smarties using chopsticks, skipping quickly using a skipping rope, and more!

He appears in the 2011 edition of the Guinness Book of Records (as well as several previous editions), has travelled around the world performing his record and has also appeared on TV programmes such as Britain's Got Talent and the Paul O'Grady Show. You can find out more about Paul at his website at www.theburperking.com.

We are thankful to Paul for coming along and the boys had great fun watching and listening to Paul demonstrating his record as well as trying some of the others for themselves!

Raft building (and sinking!)
Added 2nd July 2011 by Tom Boorman

The summer programme for Company Section and Seniors continued on 27th June with raft building with the 10th Enfield.

The group was divided into two teams - red and blue - who each had to build their own raft to be tested out on the lake at Gilwell Park. The blue team didn't do too well as most of the raft fell apart before getting onto the water and then things just got worse when it did! The red team did better as the raft worked before capsizing as the team disembarked back to dry land! Check out some photos below:

A massive thank you to everyone who came to our Quiz Night on 29th January.

A total of 52 people came along to the event, and an enjoyable evening was had by all. A grand total of £365.28 was raised, which will go directly towards supporting the work of the 3rd Enfield. Although organising the evening was a joint effort, special thanks must go to Sue Bullock (leader of the Anchor Boys), who put together all of the food and all of the quiz questions.

The quiz was won by the team from Lancaster Road URC, who received a framed certificate in recognition of their victory, which is now being proudly displayed in their Church building! The 'wooden spoon' award went to the team from the 10th Enfield Boys' Brigade, who also received a special certificate - whether it will be quite so proudly displayed remains to be seen!

Once again, many thanks to everyone who supported the quiz and made it such a fantastic evening for all involved.

From 24th to 31st July, members of the 3rd Enfield joined with the 10th Enfield Boys' Brigade and 1st Winchmore Hill Girls' Brigade for our summer camp, which was held in Beeston Regis, Norfolk.

A total of 12 boys, 3 girls and 10 members of staff went on the camp, which took place on the 10th Enfield's campsite, on a cliff top on the North Norfolk coast. Everyone got to take part in a number of activities such as a climbing wall, zip wire, go karting, pitch and putt, swimming, a trip to Pleasurewood Hills theme park, and more. There were also activities organised on site including beach trips, camp Olympics, football, a quiz, water games, an assault course, among other things. During periods of free time, everyone got the chance to play games on site or go into Sheringham, the nearest town. There were also devotions each day, led by the youth work team from Winchmore Hill Baptist Church, where the 10th Enfield BB and 1st Winchmore Hill GB are based.

During the week there was also an inter-tent competition, where the tents competed in teams in activities such as the beach Olympics, quiz, water games, etc., as well as the traditional daily tent inspections! A highlight of the week was the talent show on the last night, where everyone had to come up with and perform an item either individually or in groups of up to four people. The show included singing, dancing, magic tricks, a comedian, world record attempts and even an eating contest between the 10th Enfield and 3rd Enfield!

We had very good weather for most of the week on camp, and a very enjoyable week was had by all. We are always very grateful that the 10th Enfield invite us to join them on camp, and while the dates and location for next year are to be confirmed, it is sure to be another great week.

Anyone over 11 can also take part as a helper, and booking forms can all be downloaded from the website. It is always a fantastic week, and always involves a number of BB members, so why not come along from 9th to 13th August?

President's Badge presentation
Added 21st June 2010 by Tom Boorman

The 3rd Enfield's twenty-fourth ever President's Badge was presented during the Church Parade on 20th June 2010 at Christ Church URC.

The President's Badge was introduced in 1968, and is the second highest Award in The Boys' Brigade, with members having to be at least 15 years of age to gain it. Members who do gain it can then begin work on the Queen's Badge. Gaining the award involves a variety of skills based activities, physical recreation, leadership courses and Christian faith development.

The recipient of the award was Christian Collins-O'Connor, who has shown great commitment to the Company and in recent months has assisted with the running of our Anchor Boys and Junior Section almost every week without fail.

For his work in our younger sections, Christian also received a Young Volunteer Award. The YVA is a new award in The Boys' Brigade and recognises the voluntary work that boys do in the Company with awards for 50, 100 and 200 hours. Christian was also promoted from the rank of Lance Corporal to the rank of Corporal.

Twenty-four young men have now gained their President's Badges in the 3rd Enfield, and a handful of these have also gone on to gain the Queen's Badge, the highest award in The Boys' Brigade, which Christian now begins working towards.

North London Zone Athletics 2010
Added 19th June 2010 by Tom Boorman

A team from the 3rd Enfield's Junior Section entered the North London Zone Athletics competition on 19th June 2010.

The competition was held at Picketts Lock Stadium and featured teams from Enfield, Barnet and Haringey Battalions. The Junior Section and Company Section competitions were held on the same day, and four boys from the 3rd took part in events such as a 60 metre sprint, long jump, cricket ball throw, a relay race and other Junior Section events.

Out of 9 teams in the North London competition, the 3rd Enfield came 4th (also coming 3rd out of 7 in Enfield). The competition was won by the 1st Barnet (with the 1st Hoddesdon and 11th Enfield jointly winning the Enfield competition). The Company Section competition was won by the 1st Barnet, with the 11th Enfield winning the Enfield competition.

The majority of Companies that we were up against had bigger teams, so the boys did brilliantly to come 4th overall and even win a couple of events! Very well done to Danny, Owen, Marcus and Caspian.

We also enjoyed fantastic food and devotions led by Lewis Pearson and Kirk Edwards from Winchmore Hill Baptist Church.

Details about camp next year are yet to be decided, but they will be made available as soon as they are known.

Please see also the website of the 10th Enfield Boys' Brigade Company.
